Go Topless - VW Safari Tours definitely isn’t the type of tour that just anyone can appreciate, especially those creatures of comfort who are used to traveling in full air-conditioned vehicles. But, if you have an adventurous streak and inkling to see the ‘real’ Bali, then you are in for a treat. Recently Bali Tribune had the opportunity to participate in a VW Safari tour along with four other visitors from England and Australia. We left the dust and crowds of Kuta behind and traveled in a rainbow convoy of three vehicles along the winding back roads of Seminyak. Once away from the tourist hustle and bustle, the drivers stopped briefly to let down the canvas roofs. It was a perfect day, the sky almost cloudless with just the right amount of breeze to splay ones hair in every direction.

Although the VW or Volkswagen, as it is more commonly known, has a fairly noisy engine it was surprising the speed that our 1976 machine displayed. Our humble Balinese driver/guide, must have been a rally driver in a previous life as he expertly maneuvered the vehicle around sharp bends.

The convoy traveled through some quiet unknown roads and past some spectacular rice fields in the various stages of harvest. Workers were bundled in layers of clothing and conical hats to protect them from the harsh tropical sun as they thrashed sheaves of dried rice stalks. Groups of small village children laughed and waved as we droved by, obviously amused at the crazy tourists in the noisy machines.

Our first stop point was on the isolated Tabanan coast at Yeh Gangga Beach. After a refreshing cool drink and snack of lightly fried bananas, our group alighted two large horse drawn buggies for the five-minute trek to the beach. We were greeted by several majestic looking horses in shades of chestnut and black who were to be our companions for the next hour or so. The ride along the black volcanic sand beach was invigorating and the Menado mixture horses willingly trotted past the newly opened Wakka Gangga Resort, with stops at an ancient temple, small waterfall, bat cave and back through the sleepy village. The time atop our four-legged friends flew by and before long we were back in our newly painted cream, yellow and fluorescent orange VW’s.

Once again we wove and bumped through a series of small and un-serviced roads observing quaint villages and weather worn temples. The particular day that we were out was an auspicious day on the Balinese calendar and was especially good for a groom and his entourage of family to pick up his prospective bride from her family compound. We saw numerous processions of such with everyone decked in their finest sarongs and gold jewellery.

As our vehicles steadily proceeded through the Tabanan Regency the air became distinctly cooler in the higher altitude. The surrounding vegetation here was richer with deep red hibiscus flowers growing wildly along the roadsides alternating with tall shoots of bamboo. Our descent was steady until we reach the most stunning emerald shaded rice terraces on the island. The area of Jatiluwih has been relatively untouched by technology and comprises of literally acres of fertile land with a minimum of houses scattered in between. We had a rest at a small hillside café constructed from rods of bamboo and were served cups of sweet muddy Balinese coffee.

The last leg of our trek the drivers must have been hungry as we spiraled down from the mountainous location through villages of smiling children to our lunch destination at the Ayung River Rafting headquarters. Set on the lush sloping riverbank, the area is home to a host of chattering monkeys and a handful of regally poised camels who have adapted perfectly to their tropical environment. After a delicious buffet lunch downed with icy cold drinks we were offered the chance to participate in the afternoon river raft. On a full stomach nobody had the energy to venture the stone steps down the bank to the river. So we sat back and relaxed in the restaurant with its backdrop of splendid greenery.

The flexibility of the drivers from VW Safari’s makes a refreshing change from normal tours. They are quite willing to stop off for photos or anywhere that happens to catch the guests’ eye. There is none of the usual mundane stops at the overpriced art shops and silver dealers, where prices are hiked to give guides a slice in the commission pie.

On the trip back our group was more than a little merry, noses reddened from exposure to the sun and drunk from the sights and sounds of the ‘real’ Balinese countryside. The sky overhead was darkening with rain lurking close by. It was time to put up the canvas tops and return home.

The tour we experienced was the Tabanan Tour and guests have the option at the end of the day to stop off at Jimbaran Bay, in the south of Bali, for a succulent beachside BBQ dinner at the Bamboo and Baruna Seafood Café. We have been operating since 2001 and employ a total of 30 local and foreign workers. The Nirvana trike was designed by Steven Pritlove who has been involved in the motorcycle industry for over 20 years. Steven is from England and migrated to Bali in 1996. Not long after arriving he entered a joint venture partnership with an Australian, Kent May and together started to manufacture trikes for the world market.

We wanted to build a trike that would compare to the Rolls Royce industry and offer a recreational vehicle that would compare to no other on the world market. Day One
On arrival to Bali - 1st nights accommodation is an optional extra.airport pick-up and one nights accomodation available at the hotel.

Day Two
We start buy picking you up from your hotel and bring you to our office for a short briefing after the briefing the adventure starts ! We then leave for the famous village of Ubud. Ubud is a village set at the base of Mount Agung where we will take you to monkey forest and visit the surrounding scenery and the Japanese caves of world war 2. After touring the region we then check into the Ubud bungalows where you can enjoy the comforts of the hotel and refresh yourselves for the day ahead.

Day Three
After breakfast we then head for the spectacular scenery of Mount Agung and view the Kintamani volcano. Where we descend into the base of the volcano and tour around the lake by trike. After having lunch we then head down the mountain to the seaside village of Chandi Dasa where we will stay for the night. Day two offers awesome mountain views, rainforests, rice paddy views and ends in this beautiful seaside village. where we will refresh and rest for the day ahead.

Day Four
Day three takes us along the north east coastline of Bali where the landscape changes drastically again, this is the coastal run and from here we stop at a secluded beach for lunch and a quick swim. After lunch we head off to Singaraja the northern city of Bali. After visiting Singaraja we then move on to the tourist village of Lovina where we will camp down for the night. enjoy some of Lovina's restaurants and night life, shopping and much more in this tiny village full of character.

Day Five
We wake up have some tucker then we head west to the island of Menjangan, a good open run. After a short stay we then go to the famous hot springs at Menjangan where you can experience this unique mountain waterhole and enjoy a soothing spa in the volcanic hot springs set in a rainforest environment after lunch we mount up and head for the crossing of one of the highest mountains in Bali where the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. At the top of this mountain is the famous lake of Bedugul where we will stay for the night you will witness Bali famous botanical gardens and some of the worlds best statues of gods after a short tour of the botanical gardens we then head off to our accommodation for the night on the side of the lake of Bedugul.

Day Six
After waking in this absolutely spectacular place breathing the fresh mountain air we then start our decent to the seaside town of Tabanan. Here is the home of a unique temple called Tanahlot, here we will have lunch. After lunch we then head south to the most southern point of Bali to the famous Uluwatu temple and the famous surf beaches of south Bali. once again the scenery is spectacular with its cliff faces and deep blue oceans after touring this region we head down to the famous beachside seafood restaurants of Jimbaran bay, where our tour will finish with a beautiful Balinese seafood dinner. Once dinner is finished we then head to the awesome 5 star hotel set on the south cliffs of Bali - the Bali Cliff Resort where you will spend your final night.

Discover Scuba Diving:
Our Internationally recognized PADI Instructors will provide a safety, comfort and techniques briefing prior to the dive. The instructors will then take the participants on an exploration of the marine environment, at a maximum ratio of two participants to one instructor. The complete experience normally lasts approximately one hour.
All equipment is included.

Discover Lembongan Bay:
Lembongan Bay is ideal for those certified divers with limited experience wishing to experience the underwater sights of Lembongan, whilst remaining in the calm, clear fringing reefs of Lembongan Bay. This includes all equipment and Divemaster guide.
Proof of certification is required prior to diving.

Adrenaline Dive Safari:
Experienced divers with a minimum of thirty logged divers are able to enjoy two of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan's best boat dives. Accompanied by our experienced guides, they will experience the super reefs and marine life available in the region. This includes all equipment and Divemaster guide.
Proof of certification and 30 logged dives is required prior to diving.

"The Anchorage", SailSensations day facility on Lembongan island is situated on a 4,500 square meter terraced area adjoining the white sandy beach. An oasis where tropical Balinese bales with alang-alang have been erected to create a cool serene setting amongst the palm trees.

Marine activities are offered from "The Anchorage" where you can enjoy swimming and snorkeling. Our preferred dive operator, Bali International Diving Professional offer SCUBA diving for first timers or qualified divers.

To explore the rural scenery and traditional aspects of Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida, we offer several tours showing you the best kept secrets of these beautiful islands. From the unique and highly recommended 'mangrove tour' to the village life we offer various choices unlike any other.

09:00 Board sailSensations:
Your personal assistant will take you through the yacht's emergency procedures as sailSensations leaves Benoa Harbour. During the crossing you will be served freshly baked pastries and offered refreshing beverages. Your personal assistant will advise you of activities on board and what is available for you on the island.

10:00 - 10:30 Arrive at Lembongan Island:
You will be transferred to The Anchorage by tender. The Anchorage will be your base for the day. The 4500 square meter area designed with gentle running waterways, swimming pools, tropical bale's, create a cool serene setting, your island oasis! From here you will leave for any activity you wish to participate in or simply spend sun drenched hours soaking up the island ambience.

Choose from the following activities :
Mangrove Tour (2.5hrs)
Highly recommended. The most popular tour. An island car takes you to the 'Safe haven' sailSensations facility on the Eastern coast of the island. From here you choose to cycle or be driven along the east coast to Mangrove Point, approximately 40 minute cycle. Board a traditional dug out canoe and be taken into the mysterious mangroves. A powered canoe and car will return you to the Anchorage. Suggested use of T-shirt, sunblock and hat.

Village Tour (1 hr)
By quaint, open sided island cars, you can discover the aspects of tropical island life. See the villagers go about their daily life farming seaweed, visit the historical hand dug underground house, inspect the catch bought in by local fisherman and enjoy the view from Pura Puncak Sari a temple built on the islands highest point.

Scuba Diving (1 hrs)
Our preferred dive operator Bali International Diving Professional will take first timers and divers holding a valid certificate for the dive of their life. First timers will be introduced by an instructor before entering into a safe bay-dive on spectacular coral and fish life. Qualified divers may ask to see one of the many world class dive sites in this area. Depending on conditions, the well-documented "blue corner" may be the choice. Often the awesome, massive and rare sunfish are seen. Huge tuna, shark and manta rays are often seen. Most dive sites for qualified divers are drift dives.

Glass Bottom Boat, Reef Viewing
Our glass bottom boat will take you to Lembongan Bay where the best viewing of coral and abundant fish life can be seen. A must for those not snorkeling.

12:30 Lunch
Eating and drinking are social occasions where ambiance and trends are important. We provide a variety and choice of delicacies to pamper the most discerning palate. Your BBQ buffet meal centered around a tropical grill is cooked a-la-minute with only the freshest of ingredients. Lunch is served with complimentary wine and beer.

After you may wish to spend sun drenched hours enjoying "The Anchorage" facilities, the pool, waterslide, sun lounges or curl up with a book in one of the tents. From here a stroll to the beach for a cool swim or snorkel in the sapphire blue waters, or inspect the tropical shells washed up on the shore. All activities and tours are available morning or afternoon, should you wish to explore or simply relax in this refreshing oasis.

15:30 - 16:00 Sadly, it's time for you to depart Lembongan island for a fine sail back to Bali. Afternoon snacks and beverages are served whilst enjoying the return journey. If you wish to sail the yacht is yours.

17:00 Depending on the wind we arrive back into Benoa Harbor, Bali. You will be shown to your Hotel transfer Bus that is waiting for you adjacent the sailSensations reception.

Seven Days - Six Nights Bali-Komodo-Bali

The classic Komodo expedition

Day one Bali
Embarkation on to the Sea Safari in Benoa harbour. Departure at 09:00 AM. Lunch will be served as we pass by the majestic Agung volcano on the northeastern part of Bali. After sailing out of the Lombok Strait the vessel settles on an easterly course and we enjoy the first of many sunsets as we pass the Gili Islands off the northern coast of Lombok.

Day two Moyo and Satonda
In the early morning we make our first landfall on Moyo, a small island off the north coast of Sumbawa. We stop at one of several fine snorkeling sites along its west coast and go ashore at the village of Labuanhaji. Around mid-day we hoist the anchor again and a few hours later we reach the uninhabited island of Satonda, which is separated by a narrow strait from the Tambora volcano on the Sumbawa mainland, the site of the largest eruption in recorded history. Going ashore we discover that Satonda itself is a small volcano as well and that a salty lake fills its crater. We spend the remainder of the afternoon swimming and snorkeling. At sunset we find that the island is home to a large colony of fruit eating giant bats, or flying foxes, and after dinner we set sail again.

Day three Banta and Misa
As the day breaks we realize that we are at anchor in front of a stunningly beautiful beach and looking on the chart we find out that our captain has moored the vessel off Banta, another uninhabited island which lies at the entrance of the Sape Strait right on the boundary between West and East Nusa Tenggara provinces. We spend the morning swimming and exploring the island and if we are lucky we may spot some of the giant turtles that are known to congregate near Banta. Around noon we go underway again and in the course of the afternoon, once we have entered the Linta Strait, we anchor off the small island of Misa and visit one of the two colonies of the Baju, the “sea gypsies”, the indigenous people from this area. In the early evening we arrive at our final destination when our ship anchors in the calm and peaceful Bay of Komodo.

Day four Komodo
Early in the morning we go ashore where a park ranger will escort us across the island (about 4.5 km there and back) to a viewing spot where we can safely watch the “Komodo Dragons”, the giant monitor lizards, at close range. Komodo National Park is the only place on earth where one can see the dragons in their own habitat. After this encounter with the species from the Jurassic Age, we will spend the remainder of the day beachcombing and snorkeling on the beautiful “red beach” of Komodo with its amazing marine gardens. After dinner we hoist the anchor and go underway again.

Day five Bima and East Sumbawa
As the sun rises we arrive in the busy traditional harbor of Bima, which is situated at the end of a long inlet deep in the heart of Eastern Sumbawa. We spend the morning exploring the town and the Donggo Highlands west of Bima Bay. Around lunchtime we leave the quay and after sailing out of Bima Bay we go on a westerly heading again for our overnight passage to Lombok.

Day six Lombok
In the course of the morning we anchor at Amoramor Bay on the north Coast of Lombok, where we go ashore for an excursion to the Sendang Gile Waterfalls in the lush foothills of the Rinjani volcano. After the sunset the crew will prepare a BBQ dinner on one of the beaches near our anchorage. During the night the crew will raise the anchor again to proceed to the Gili Islands of West Lombok.

Day seven Bali
We spend a last morning snorkeling and swimming anchored off one of the Gili Islands. Around noon we set sail and we arrive back in Benoa around 17:00. Disembarkation.

Cruising through Indonesia one encounters an incredible variety of indigenous sailing craft and the best known are the Buginese schooners. Until today several thousands of these keep plying the inter-island trading routes of Indonesia carrying cargo.

In the old days these schooners were pure sailing boats and consequently they were sometimes becalmed in windless seas for weeks on end. Although the “Phinisis” have retained their sailing rigs, since the late sixties virtually all of them have been motorized and nowadays they could best be described as motor-sailers. Traditionalists would not even call them schooners anymore as the aft masts have generally become smaller than the foremasts. Nowadays they are in fact ketches while the one masted ones should be referred to as cutters.

What has not changed however is the thousand year old boat building tradition of the Bugis, who are indigenous to South Sulawesi and have been known throughout the ages as the sailors, the traders and the pirates of the archipelago.

All Sea Safari vessels have been handcrafted by Bugi master carpenters, who were allowed to use only the very best, well seasoned, “ulin”, or ironwood, available. What sets them apart is that at the same time, Mr. Zainal Abidin, owner and chief architect of Sea Safari, has been incorporating his experience as a builder of tugboats into the final designs of all the vessels himself. They are sturdy ships with an easy motion that offer a level of comfort, otherwise only found on the very largest yachts.

Sea Safari maintains the youngest fleet in Indonesia. The oldest ship currently in operation was launched in 1997.

SUBSEA
This is an excellent opportunity to see the coral formations and tropical fish without getting wet. See the board on pontoon for departure times. The trip takes approximately 20 minutes and no booking are necessary. The subsea carries 34 passengers on each trip.

SNORKELING
Equipment will be available to your on arrival at the pontoon and our snorkeling advisors will be happy to help you. Snorkels have been palaced in a disinfectant solution and you are asked to rinse them in the sea before use. The water off the pontoon is a 6 meters deep do you must be able to swim if entering the water from the swimming platform. Due to occasional strong currents we advice that you swim inside the swimming enclosure. Fresh water showers are on the pontoon near the boarding ramp, and we ask you to please dry off before entering the cabin.

BANANA BOAT RIDES

A safe and exciting underwater adventure Sea Walker is a unique diving system, provides an opportunity to observe the underwater world to a depth of 15 feet without certification, and without getting their hair wet. Participants actually walk on the bottom, rather than swim while numerous exotic fish and sea life surround them. Guest will have 30 minutes of actual underwater time to a maximum depth of 15 feet. A large, full face window in the Sea Walker helmet offers a close-up view of the amazing creatures from below. Guest with heart or lung problems, on medication, pregnant, asthma or other respiratory ailments, etc can not dive.

Whitewater Rafting
This exhilarating journey, which is fun for the whole family,begins with the descent to the head of the Ayung River. On boarding your raft you are almost immediately swept silently through the BAT RAVINE.

Experience the eerie atmosphere as you drift past thousands of roosting bats.Traverse the first rapids the breathtaking waterfall as close as you dare. Now brace yourself for the excitement as you surge through the second and third stretches of rapids (classes three and two).

You will now have the opportunity of leaving the raft to enter a cave where you can through the waterfall or, if you prefer, take a leisurely swim.

After an early morning start drive to the heart of Bali and the Lakeview Restaurant in the region of Kintamani. Over a light breakfast with tea and coffee enjoy the breathtaking views of Lake Batur and the still active Volcano Gunung Batur. This is a sight not to be missed and the morning vistas of the Volcano and stunning Volcano Lake will be an awe-inspiring start to a fantastic day.

The Start Point is located a further 15 minutes away, and it is there you will be outfitted with helmets, cycling gloves, mountain bike and given a full safety and instructional brief by our expert guides. After a short warm-up the fun begins, with the mostly down-hill course taking you through local villages, farms and rice paddy terraces. THE SOBEK STORY

Sobek Expeditions was established after on eventful trip to the upper reaches of the Nile 20 years ago. During the expedition a five metre crocodile attacked one of the rafts. Although nobody was hurt, two local men who saw what happened came up later saying "Sobek, Sobek... ", the local name of the river god. And so the company found its name.

Sobek Bali Utama now employs a total of 400 people including highly trained adventure tour guides, administration staff encompassing operations, accounting, marketing, transportation and support.
Advisor to the Directors is founder Nick Blackboard, a former teacher who has spent more than twelve years in Indonesia and who has a keen and active interest in adventure pursuits.
Sobek has recently set up a wide-ranging "Customer Services" training school to ensure efficient service for all our clients. SOBEK AND THE PEOPLE OF BALI

Sobek is very much involved with the local people who live along the Ayung River and takes an active interest in promoting the preservation of the river and the communities that surround it.

A company, Wisata Arung Jerom, was set up to provide local people with port ownership of the river operation. The revenues are distributed according to the "Banjor" system, so the people who live beside the river share in its success, and have the economic means to preserve their traditional way of life.

LKMB (Lembaga Kerja Masyarakat Begawan) was established to ensure people from the village of Begawan at Sobek's start point participate in the river operation. It employs local people using a system of one employee per household so wages can be spread throughout the village.

More than half the staff working for Sobek ore local people from the villages around the river, because the company believes that they know best about the river - they have, after all, lived there all their lives.

Sobek undertakes weekly gotong royong clean-up programmes along the length of the river and the courses of the cycling and trekking trips.

SOBEK, Questions & Answering

What do I need to bring with we?
You should wear swimwear or shorts and a T-shirt and a pair at trainers or river shoes. Bring along a sunscreen or hot, your voucher or money for payment and a change of clothes for afterwards.

Can I bring a camera?
Yes. We have dry bags for your cameras so you can use them when we stop for pictures.

What about a video camera?
Yes, the same applies, although it would be safer to leave it behind. We have camera crews who can produce a professional video record of your adventure.

Do we get anything to eat during the trip?
After the rofting, we serve o full buffet lunch at our garden restaurant on the banks of the river. The buffet, which is prepared oy the famous Cafe Wayan in Ubud, includes Balinese specialities and a variety of international dishes.

Will I be pick up at wy hotel?
Yes. From Nusa Dua it takes about one hour to get to the start point, about 45 minutes from Sanur and Kuta and about 15 minutes from Ubud.

How long does the trip take?
The whole trip takes about half a day, with about two hours spent on the river, an hour for a meal and shower after the trip and transport to and from your hotel.

What tiwe will I get back after the trip?
The whole trip tokes obout six hours, depending on where you are picked up from. Five hours from Ubud, five and a half hours from Kuta or Sanur and six hours from Nusa Dua.

Where is the river?
The Ayung river is neor Ubud, in the foothills of the volcanoes. It runs through rain forest, with a variety of unusual plants and ancient trees along the way.

How often do we stop along the river?
We stop once for a 10 minute rest near a waterfall and make a couple of short stops to take photographs.

What is there to see?
Many birds and animals live along the river. There are more than 10 spectacular waterfalls falling into the river which runs past steep stone cliffs and tropical rain forest. On the other bank, Balinese people can be seen working in their fields or swimming in the river.

How fast the river?
The Ayung river is a Class 2 rafting river, which means it is rocky, safe and fun. The grading system goes from one, which is flat, up to five, which is considered unraftable.

How wany rapids are there?
There are 25 rapids on the trip. Some are bigger than the others, but they are all safe and fun.

Do the guides speak English?
All our guides speak English, and many speak a number of other languages, including Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese and Korean. We also have interpreters available for the safety briefings.

What about in an emergency?
Although our rafting is perfectly safe and we have never had a serious accident, all our guides are trained aid first aid and experienced in handling potential dangers. We carry out regular safety drills and training sessions ror our staff.

Is there any insurance?
We offer US$50,000 insurance to our customers, backed by an international insurance company. Although the guides will take care of your equipment on the river, please take responsibility for your own belongings as they are not covered.

Is the river safe for children and/or old people?
The river is safe for children aged seven years and over. Children's rates apply to those aged 7-12 and we will take anyone up to the age of 65 providing they are fit.

THE TRIP

Book your adventure by speaking to our friendly, English-speaking operations staff. Air-conditioned mini-buses wll pick guests up at their hotel from between 7.45 and 9.45 am for the morning trip, and 12.15 and 2.15 p.m. for the afternoon trip. We take guests in air-conditioned comfort to the starting point at Begawan, 8 kilometres from Ubud where they wit hove the chance to see this traditional Balinese mountain village. Our cashiers there wilt collect payment or vouchers.
Guests will be fitted wth life-jackets and safety helmets, and given paddles. Our guides will introduce themselves to the clients. Guest are then taken down our environmentally-friendly path to the river. Cut into the hill-side and reinforced using local construction methods, the path affords spectacular views of the Ayung River as it wnds its way round an S-bend.

At our put-in point, ALL GUESTS WILL BE GIVEN A COMPREHENSIVE SAFETY BRIEFING by our highly-qualified guides. Alt our guides speak good English as they have all completed English courses at the Indonesian Australian Language Foundation. We also have guides who speak German, Italian, Spanish, French, Japanese and Korean. River dry bags are provided for client's valuables and cameras.

The 2-hour rafting trip is fun and exhilarating. Clients enjoy the thrill of the rapids, the beauty of the scenery and observe rural Balinese people in their day- to-day life on the river. A stop is made of a spectacular waterfall, and clients are given the chance to get out of the boot to try a natural whirlpool bath.
On the way down our specially-positioned cameramen take still photos and video footage of the indi- vidual boats. These are available for purchase at the end of the trip.

After the last rapid, guest can leave the rafts and float through a quiet logoon to our award-winning Balinese Garden restaurant. Here, the famous Cafe Wayan of Ubud provides an excellent Balinese buffet lunch or dinner.
After their meal, guest walk up to our rafting centre at Kedewatan, where they can shower and change.

SAFETY ON THE RIVER

All rivers are graded according to an internationally recognized system.
Class 1: calm water, not moving
Class 2: moving water
Class 3: fast moving water
Class 4: very fast moving water
Class 5: very fast moving water with steep drops
Class 6: water with danger to life.

The Ayung River is generally a Class 2 river, with a few rapids reaching Class 3, especially during the rainy season when water levels are higher. This makes it suitable for all people who hove a basic level of fitness and no fear of water.

GUIDES

Our guides have been trained in all classes of river using the Swift Water Rescue programme to American Whitewater Affiliation and Australian White- water Standards. Many hove taken part in exchange trips to Australia and the USA. All have regular first aid training including CPR and dealing with minor injuries. Several of our guides represented Indonesia in the World Whitewater Championship in Turkey in 1993.

RAFTS

Our Riken self-boiling rafts ore tough and resilient, specially-designed to withstand the wear-and- tear of the bolder-strewn Ayung River. They are designed in the US and produced under contract in Japan.

LIFE JACKETS

Our life-jackets are specially-designed for river rafting. They float the upper torso of the swimmer above water, covering the waist and protecting the sensitive kidney area. They are zip-secured and strap tightened for a snug fit.
They come in three sizes - small, medium and large to fit all clients.

HELMETS

The wearing of helmets is compulsory on all our trips. Our approved helmets have adjustable interior straps to fit all sizes and are secured with a chin strap.

Our mountain cycling trip provides a gentle downhill ride for beginners and experienced cyclists alike. We start 5,000 feet high on the lip of Mount Batur, and cycle through mountain villages, past picturesque rice terrace scenery down to Ubud for lunch.

Guests are taken in air-conditioned transport up to the lip of Mount Batur. Here we have a snack overlooking the spectacular mountain scenery. Guides will give a safety introduction to guests, explaining how to use the brakes and gears, how to avoid too much exposure to the sun, how to make sure they drink enough fluids, and to always wear their helmets.

We then set off on our gentle down-hill descent of the Batur Trail. We pass through sleepy mountain villages, past traditional Balinese temples and stunning riceterrace scenery as we make our way towards Ubud.
There are plenty of opportunities for guests to stop and admire the views, look at the temples and take photos. Our guides will explain any aspect of Balinese culture that interests guests.

Drinking water-bottles are provided for the trip, and an air-conditioned support vehicle is available for those who feel tired or hot.

BATUKARU TRAIL

We start our cycling adventure in one of Bali's only remaining areas of wilderness, high up in the the pristine rainforest that cover the 2,278 meter high Batukaru mountain. Vast uninhabited forests cover Batukaru and it boasts stunning jungle uplands with sublime landscapes. Our lunch stop is at the natural hot springs at Yeh Panas.

Guest are taken in air-conditioned transport to Batukaru mountain, the most westerly of Bali's three highest summits which dominate the Tabanan regency.Known locally as "Coconut Shell" mountain, one of Bali's most important shrines.

As we make our way downhill, we pass through quiet mountain slopes magnificent views take in the whole of Bali's southern coast extending wetward across the entire mountain range to the Bali Barat national park.

THE TRIP

Air-conditioned transport takes us to the mountains and the traditional village of Bedugul. We stop at the roadside on the way up to meet the wild monkeys, and then stop at Bedugul's mountain market for a look at its array of fresh produce-from exotic spices to tropical fruit.

Our start point is high above the twin lakes of Tamblingan and Buyan which affords stunning views of the lakes and the rainforest. We proceed on a gently downward sloping path towards the unique Dalam Tamblingan temple and the sacred lake.

A rest at the tample, where we take refreshments, provides the opportunity to talk with the guides about Balinese culture and take some photos. We then walk down to the lakeside, and up through canopied rainforest, past giant creeper-clad trees, back to our waiting transport.
The transport takes us back to Bedugul for a buffet lunch overlooking stunning rice-terrace scenery. Then it's back to the hotel in air-conditioned comfort.

B1. Beach Flight
Fly along the famous Kuta and Legian beach just above the surf. Experience the thrill of a helicopter ride while you wave at the surfers below!

S1. Uluwatu Temple Coastline Flight
Uluwatu means "the head of stone", and is one of the most spectacular Hindu temples along the Bali coastline. Built by a high Hindu priest from East Java named Dang Hyang Dwijendra in the 11th century, this beautiful temple is located atop a limestone cliff towering 90 meters above the Indian Ocean. Flying south past Jimbaran Bay and Dreamland surfing beach, we view this ancient temple and then continue over deserted beaches, seaweed farms and limestone cliffs. Before turning north towards the airport we briefly fly over the Bukit and the famous Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue.

S2. Flight of the Temples Coastline Flight
This is a panoramic flight of the west and south coasts of Bali that highlights the beaches of Kuta and Legian, the mysterious Tanah Lot temple, and remarkable rice terraces. Tanah Lot temple was founded in 1481 AD by a famous Hindu priest Dang Hyang Nirartha. It is situated in the ocean, and can only be reached during low tide. The temple has a reputation for being dangerous, partly due to the many poisonous snakes that live in the surrounding caves. It is believed by the locals that these snakes are protectors of the temple, guarding it from intruders. We proceed towards the southern Bukit peninsula, past Jimbaran Bay and Dreamland surf beach. Then we fly onwards to the ancient Uluwatu temple, where the coastline of limestone cliffs, remote beaches and seaweed farms are truly spectacular. This trip is sensational at sunset.

S3. Nusa Penida Island Coastal Flight
Following airport take off we fly direct east over the Straits of Badung and towards Nusa Penida. After 15 minutes of over-water flight time we reach the island of Nusa Penida. Turning south we fly low past this islands' beautiful limestone cliffs and follow the contours of the coastline until we reach Nusa Ceningan. After flying between these two islands we then head back to Bali.

S4. Kintamani Volcano Flight
From the airport we fly to the breathtaking volcanic crater of Mt. Batur. This crater is the remains of a huge volcano that exploded thousands of years ago. Lake Batur, Bali's largest lake, is situated within this crater and is next to a younger active volcano. This small volcano is constantly recreating itself in periodic eruptions of ash and rock. We explore this sometimes-smoking volcano by circling the crater and make a quick turn over Lake Batur before heading south over river gorges and beautiful rice fields.

S5. Deluxe Kintamani- and Agung Volcano and Besakih Temple Flight
Fly to the breathtaking volcanic crater of Mt. Batur via Tanah Lot temple on the west coast. We reach Mt. Batur volcano after 10 minutes of flight time over diverse landscape. This crater is the remains of a huge explosion that occurred thousands of years ago. Lake Batur, Bali's largest lake, is situated within this crater, next to a younger active volcano. The small volcano is constantly recreating itself in periodic eruptions of ash and rock. We explore this sometimes-smoking volcano by circling the crater. Proceeding east we then fly over Lake Batur and past Mt. Abang, reaching Besakih temple, Bali's biggest temple complex. The aircraft now starts to climb to an astonishing 11,000 ft, to reach the crater of Mt. Agung. In 1963, this massive volcano erupted, causing the death of 1,148 people. Pyroclastic flow, ejected glowing rock fragments and volcanic ashfalls killed proved deadly for the victims. Thousands of hectares of agriculture land and forest were also destroyed. Upon reaching the top, we circle the crater and then start to descend towards Besakih Temple at the foot of the mountain. In the distance Mt. Rinjani on the neighboring island of Lombok is visible. On the return journey to the airport, we pass numerous rivers, valleys, hotels and villas and of course, beautiful rice fields. Prior to landing, the route takes us via the eastern coastline to see the beaches of Sanur and Benoa harbor.

S6. The Best of Bali
Our condensed "Best of Bali" tour gives the opportunity to view all of Bali's sites in one tour as we take you along Kuta beach to Tanah Lot temple, Bedugul highlands, Mt. Batur volcano and lake, the majestic Mt. Agung, the holy Besakih Temple, enchanting Candi Dasa, the eastern coastline, famous Sanur beaches, Benoa Harbour, Nusa Dua and Uluwatu Temple. The traditional splendour of Bali is truly magnificent from the air.

HISTORIC VOLCANO FLIGHT

V1. Mt. Rinjani Volcano Tour - Lombok
Famed for its beauty and isolation, Mt. Rinjani is Indonesia's second highest volcano. At 3,726 meters, it towers over Lombok, and boasts a ten-kilometer-wide crater - a habitat with deep gorges, towering walls, hot springs, waterfalls, and a perfect volcanic cone. This strato-volcano's oval-shaped Segara Anak caldera also contains a 230-m-deep lake. The earliest recorded eruption at Rinjani dates back to 1847 when a moderate explosion occurred. The most recent eruption was in October 2004 when smoke and a lava flow were detected.

V2. Mt. Tambora Volcano Tour and Sumbawa (include Mt.Rinjani Volcano Tour)
Visit the volcano that experienced the biggest eruption in recorded history! When Mt. Tambora erupted in 1815, it caused a cataclysmic disaster and the deaths of 90,000 people. This event significantly altered the global climate for years afterwards. Universal crop failure occurred, temperatures dropped dramatically all over the world, and living creatures died off in large numbers. After being dormant for 5000 years, Mt. Tambora woke up and over a ten-day period and numerous explosions, unleashed its anger in an eruption that generated a volcanic column 40km high. This blast was heard over 1000 kilometers away.

The long-term effects of Mt. Tambour's eruption were felt across the globe. In addition to the large quantities of ash, rocks and dust ejected by the volcano, over 200 million tons of sulphur dioxide gas was propelled into the stratosphere. This had the effect of limiting the amount of sunlight that reached the ground, so that temperatures, particularly across the Northern Hemisphere, began to fall dramatically. India's monsoon season was interrupted, possibly leading to a deadly outbreak of cholera that insinuated its way across the globe. Europe experienced widespread crop failures just as it was recovering from the effects of the Napoleonic Wars. Ireland had its first great famine. Devastating floods hit China. In North America, 1816 is remembered as "the year without a summer", when snow fell during June and frost was still widespread during the month of July.

V3. Mt. Bromo Volcano Flight
Mt. Bromo, on the island of Java is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes. It is part of the Tengger massif, and even at 2392m it is not the highest peak of the massif, but it happens to be the most renowned one. Mount Bromo rises 133 meters above the caldera and is 700 meters wide. It has erupted more than 60 times since 1767. The Indonesian archipelago, straddling the seismically active "Ring of Fire," has the world's highest density of volcanoes. Of its 500 volcanoes, 128 are active and 65 are listed as dangerous. According to a local folk tale, at the end of the 15th century princess Roro Anteng from the Majapahit Empire started a separate principality together with her husband Joko Seger. They named it Tengger by the last syllables of their names. The principality did prosper, but the ruling couple failed to have children. In their despair they climbed Mount Bromo to pray to the gods, who granted them help, but requested that the last child be sacrificed to the gods. They had 24 children, and when the 25th and last child Kesuma was born, Roro Anteng refused to perform the promised sacrificial act. The gods then threatened with fire and brimstone, until the sacrifice was finally carried out. After the child was thrown into the crater, a voice is said to have ordered the local people to perform an annual ceremony at the volcano, which is still held today.

In order to enhance and augment the attraction of their In-house activities, some resorts and hotels in Bali appoint YOS Marine Adventures to organize Discover Scuba Diving programs and Marine Sports tours for the guests.

The main operation based of YOS Marine Adventures is right on the white sandy beach of Tanjung Benoa in the Nusa Dua area which it is hosted by friendly caring and multilingual staff. Besides National and local languages, our team speaks English, German and Japanese.

It is a friendly beach that offers a lot attraction for the whole family, such as Banana Boat riding, Jet Skiing, Parasailing, Dolphin Watching Tours, and lots more. However, the most specific services of YOS are the dive boats. The four of powered boats were built for the purpose of fast and comfortable dive travel to Nusa Penida Island and charter. 2 x 115HP Outboards Engines power each boat that also has changing room and rest room onboard. Sailing yacht will be available soon to support the fleet. As well as Daily Diving Tours, Dive Safari around Bali, and Dive Courses, one might customize their dive programs with YOS.

THE RESTAURANT
Waka Namya restaurant has designed at Waka setting, Eyes catching, good ambiance and romantic atmosphere. Design will achieve flexibility of ambience by creating changes of mood based on meals periods. Table setting includes pas flowers or single frangipani flower in simple stone vase. Open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner with 30 seating capacity. No dress code requirements ( smart casual ). Hotel guests get first priority on seating however outside guests are always welcome. Dinner offers are menu of classical local Indonesian specialties can be also provided.

Service style is friendly, warm welcome, relaxed and unhurried. Staffs take the time to talk with guests when possible. Uniforms are in natural fabrics with subtle earth tone colors and Balinese design accordance with Waka style.

Price are in line with other international standard restaurant in Ubud, but offer a slightly better value. Give it more to the guest and we will get more from them (Karma). Our restaurant will open starting 06.30 am. up to 22.30 pm.

Rice Paddies Trekking
To complete your experience at Waka Padma Resort, one of hotel activities that we offer to our guest are Rice Paddies Tracking, which will be offering three times a week at 07:00 a.m on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday or Special request. One of our staff will host you during this trip. Our journey will take you through an intricate pattern of lush green rice paddies and field of shimmering water to a farmer footpath where you will observe the ancient technique of plugging, planting, irrigating, harvesting and walk along.
