SABA VILLAGE

The Village of Saba is the centre of a traditional princely domain. Five villages lie within the realm: Belang Singa, Pinda, Banda, Bonbiyu and Saba itself.

The area is bounded by two rivers-the Petanu to the west and the Kutuh to the east - and on the south by the ocean. Local mythology describes the Petanu as male and the Kutuh, female where they sometimes join in a fertile flood, the river is said to be pregnant. A temple stands there. Its name, Pura Suka Luwih, can be translated as "Temple of Heavenly Happiness".

Saba Village is small, comprising about one hundred households. Most of the villagers are farmers. They grow paddy rice, coconut palms and fruit trees. Recently the villagers have begun to practice the craft of silver-smithing. Connoisseurs of Balinese dance know Saba Village for its legong dancers. Legong is a highly difficult dance form of sacred origin, performed by young girls. The excellence of Saba's dancers is due to their dance master, I Gusti Gede Raka, the Prince of Puri Taman Saba.

Born in 1916, I Gusti Gede Raka was a friend and hero to Colin McPhee, the American composer who visited Bali in the 1930's and wrote of his life there in his classic book, A House In Bali, and in his seminal study, Music In Bali. Covarrubias also wrote of Saba in The Island Of Bali.

In these and other writings, I Gusti Gede Raka Figures as an archetypal Balinese Prince: charismatic, artistic and endlessly energetic. Now in his eighties, he continues to practice such traditional arts as classical painting and the carving of Topeng Masks. Among his palace retinue are master craftsmen to service all aspects of Balinese theatre, including the making of sacred dance costumes and the carving of the ornate frames for gamelan instruments.

Another maestro in the are is I Wayan Senen, a gamelan musician, composer and teacher from the neighbouring village of Pinda whose orchestra is famous throughout the island.
